Aromatherapy at the Dentist

Dorothy, We’re not in a Dental Office Anymore

Many people associate a particular smell with going to the dentist. Nowadays, with the aromatic candles and essential oils or aromatherapy, those unpleasant memories can be pushed away!

Aromatherapy is fast becoming popular in people’s homes and now in the dental office too! The combination of psychology and fragrance technology is sometimes called aromachology. Environmental fragrances can be incorporated into aromatic botanical extracts called essential oils that alter brain chemistry to produce emotional or psychological effects.

Essential oils work through the olfactory nerve, a direct extension from the limbic system of the brain, to stimulate feelings of confidence or relaxation; sometimes they have a mild sedative effect, which may help reduce feelings of anxiety in dental phobics.

If patients are not allergic or susceptible to asthma or bronchitis, an essential oil can be dropped sparingly on a patient bib to help him or her to relax. We can try this for you to create a more modern and relaxing dental experience.
