Crowns are commonly used to give strength to teeth that need it perhaps from extensive decay, a large filling, chip or break or a root canal. A durable, tooth-colored metal called Zirconium is used under our porcelain crowns to give more durability for teeth that get a lot of forces.
The good news is that you never have to worry that an unsightly black line will show at the gumline of these crowns because there is not a dark metal involved like the former porcelain fused to metal crowns! For patients receiving crowns in the smile zone we often select an all ceramic crown for the most natural looking result. The best crown material is determined by an individual’s bite and esthetic considerations.
